Lets Go!!! Friday 1/14/2011 Day (1)

We want to go but Jewel Doesn't!

We spent all day Thursday packing the MH or at least packing the areas we had access to. Because of the snow storm on Wednesday the roof was loaded with snow and ice impeding our ability to open the slides without causing damage. So anything that was to be stored in the cabinets behind the slides was placed in boxes in the tub. We like everything to be organized and in its proper place so can’t wait to get to warmer temps and put everything where it belongs.

The I-95 corridor is the road we like the least. It is always crowded, boring and seemingly endless but a necessary route to Florida in the winter. Generally we love the journey but not on this route.

r0n NOTE: Deb had insisted we rid the roof of snow up to and including calling  RT 44 RV for solutions, there solution was bring it down for 2 hours put in their heated garage and leave $200 behind. Let me tell you we saw plenty of vehicles with lots of snow on the roof.

There were slow-downs everywhere  beginning in Providence when a tractor–trailer decided to block traffic 250 feet before our exit.

We had left our house around 11:30 AM and expected to make good time getting through New York City before rush hour - but that didn’t happen. Approximately 5 miles from the George Washington Bridge traffic came to a virtual standstill. We hadn’t thought about the holiday weekend and the possibility that people would be getting out of work early. Well they did and everyone was trying to get in and out of the city at the same time. It took 1.5 hours to drive the 5 miles and once over the GW bridge traffic lightened. We’ve  used the GW many times and have never run into that much traffic.

We arrived at the Molly Pitcher Rest area on the Jersey Pike around 5:30 pm after our harrowing 6 hour 242 mile drive. We didn’t make very good time with all the traffic and traffic slow-downs.

Jewel has adjusted to being back on the road and is settling in quite nicely although she has not eaten very much except her doggy treats.

After arriving at the Molly Pitcher we had a light dinner and  settled in. The temp was in the low 20’s soon to be teens and we weren’t sure if all of our on board systems would work well. Like our heat for example. We were both so tired that we went to bed at 7 PM.

As stated on Friday we went to bed at  7 PM only to wake at 2 AM  realizing that , in fact our heating had stopped working because the house batteries had run too low. This usually occurs with the bitter cold anyway so we weren’t so surprised. We did not fill the water tank so had to rough it like we were camping in a tent for the night. So after a light breakfast we were back on the road at 3 am.

The traffic was very light so we were able to make good time. We stopped at the Clara Barton rest area for gas. NJ must have upped their gas tax because the gas was $3.02 a gallon. This is unusual because NJ is usually the cheapest place on the East Coast to buy gas.
