3rd day St. Andrews SP Monday 2011-01-31 Day (18)

We had originally planned on leaving this morning but when we woke it was pouring out. The weather report sated that it was going to rain all day so we decided to stay put for one more day.

I took Jewel for a walk in the rain and  read a book while Ronnie worked on the blog.

Later in the evening we went into Panama City Beach and ate at The Cantina a local Mexican Restaurant. Our margaritas were the best and food was pretty good but not the best.

Tomorrow we should be heading out to Grayton Beach.  We’ll see what the day brings.

AFTERNOON HIKE

We took a hike along a trail that took us to the Gulf and a walk along the beach. There was no breeze and the weather was perfect. We collected shells and enjoyed the beach. We walked for over an hour and ran into multiple deer enjoying their evening grass snacks.

There were balls of oil along the beach and in the water from the oil spill in the gulf.

We arrived at St. Andrew around 11:30 am and were given a site across from the bay. Since we are both picky, picky, picky about the site we are in we chose a different site and returned to registration to make the change. Of course that site was booked for tonight so off we went to check out other possible sites on the water. Finally we secured site 116 right on the bay. After three trips back to registration we settled in at 1:30 PM.

CAMPSITE # 116

TURPENTINE STILL

Later we toured the park and stopped at the turpentine mill that was moved from its original site several miles away. At one point in time Florida was the largest producer of turpentine in the country.

PANAMA CITY BEACH

We drove into Panama City Beach and looked around. It's a typical seaside resort town. Fortunately we are here in the shoulder season so there is little to no activity. We're told that it is wild and crazy here during Spring Break in March.

Ron has been talking about pecan waffles since we left on this trip so we we stopped at the Waffle House and enjoyed very delicious pecan waffles.

We are slowly working our way to Pensacola 40-50 miles at a time. Ron wants to stop at all the state ocean front CG's along the way. Each is quite beautiful and different.

Tomorrow we will enjoy the area and do some hiking along the bay.

Early Morning Sunrise over the Dead Lakes

Ron was up at 6:30 am to get pictures of Dead Lake at sunrise. It was foggy and spoky but beautiful.

r0n NOTE:

Deb insisting Jewel need to be tied up, see the determination on her face? You should have seen the one I was made to delete.

In my defense, Jewel is a little devil and she likes to wander when we are not with her. She snookers Ron daily. HAH!

Check out my FACE

We spoke to one of the CG workers and found out that if we wanted to see more of Dead Lake we would need a boat and that it was very easy to get lost if not familiar with the territory.

The rest of the day we soaked up the sun and then decided to wash the car and the MH. Finally got the dirt off both and looking good.

DeaD Lake Campground Thursday, 01/27/2011 Day (14)

We saw a picture of Dead Lake in a brochure so decided  we needed to take a look ourselves. Very intriguing place but in order to get the full impact of the Dead Lake a boat tour is needed.Unfortunately, no boat tours in the off season. BLAH!

Once again we found a great CG in the middle of nowhere. Two manmade lakes sit right outside our window. There are just a few other people here so the place is virtually empty.

The weather warmed up and we were able to sit in the sun and soak up some Vitamin D.

LOCAL RESIDENTS

We drove around the area and felt like we had fallen into a scene from Deliverance. Ron kept singing the theme song until I wacked him.  Someone really does live on that houseboat.!!!!

3rd Day St.Joe SP Wednesday, 01/26/2011 Day (13)

We woke around 2 AM from the noise of the wind howling, the MH swaying and something banging against the back of the MH. It kept us awake most of the night and spooked Jewel. There was a branch banging against the aluminum ladder at the back of the MH that Ron removed this morning.

We had planned on packing up and moving to a new location but decided to stay one more night. We took a ride out to the Cape San Blas lighthouse but it was closed to tours today.

We walked on the beaches in the area and Jewel was happy because she was allowed on the beach as well.

The day has been beautiful with sunny skies and  the temp around 57. Still windy but OK.

Tomorrow we head out to Wewahitchka or “Wewa”  to the Dead Lakes County Park. The pictures we have seen of that area are spectacular and we are looking forward to going there. Traveling through this part of Florida has been different, fun and interesting.

check out VIDEO OF OCEAN

It rained all day today so we passed the time reading and talking. The rain finally stopped around 6PM so Ron, Jewel and I  went for a nice walk along one of the CG trails. The wind was gusting and the ocean waves were crashing.  Clouds hung in the sky so no sunset pictures tonight.
